Website vs Facebook page: what a small SA business actually needs

    5 min read

Plenty of South African businesses run entirely on a Facebook page. Here is where that works, and where it quietly costs you customers.

What a Facebook page does well

It is free, it is quick to set up, and your customers are already there. For posting updates, showing recent work and letting people message you, it is genuinely useful.

If you are testing an idea or running a side business, starting on social is a sensible first move.

    Where it falls short

You do not own it. Reach depends on an algorithm you cannot control, pages get restricted without warning, and everything you built disappears with the account.

More importantly, a Facebook page rarely shows up when somebody searches Google for your service plus your area. That is where most buying decisions start.

    • No control over who sees your posts
    • Weak visibility in Google search results
    • No control over the layout or the buying journey
    • Hard to present pricing, services and proof clearly
    • You cannot retarget visitors properly without a site
    • Looks less established to a cautious first-time buyer

    The combination that works

Use the website as the permanent home for your services, pricing, proof and contact details. Use social for personality, recent work and staying visible between jobs.

Every social post should have somewhere to send interested people, and that somewhere should be a page you own.
