What a business website actually costs in South Africa, what changes the price, and the ongoing fees nobody mentions upfront.
Ask five providers what a website costs and you will get five very different answers. That is because website is a word covering everything from a one page template to a custom online store with stock management.
The honest answer is that price tracks three things: how many pages you need, how much of the content and design work you are handing over, and whether anything custom has to be built.
The build itself is usually the smallest part. Most of the value sits in the thinking around it: how the pages are structured, what the copy says, how quickly it loads and how obvious the next step is for a visitor.
Your domain renews every year. Hosting is monthly or annual. SSL should be free but some providers still charge for it. If you want changes made, someone has to make them.
Before you sign anything, ask exactly what the annual running cost is and what happens if you want to move providers. If the answer is vague, that is your answer.
Compare the deliverables, not the totals. A cheaper quote that excludes content, hosting setup and search basics is usually the more expensive option once you have paid someone else to finish the job.
Ask to see sites the provider has built, check them on your phone, and see how fast they load. That tells you more than any proposal document.
